10k buses to ferry people back to city
CHENNAI: The State Transport Corporations would operate about 10,000 buses from various parts of the State to the city to facilitate the return of those who went to visit their hometown for Deepavali.
In a release, the Managing Director of the State Express Transport Corporation said that 9,998 bus-es would be operated to Chennai from October 28 to 30 to facilitate the return of the passengers those who visited their hometowns outside the city. Similarly, 6,698 buses would be operated to other parts of the State.
On Monday, 3,825 buses, including 1,600 special buses, would be operated to Chennai from various parts of the State, while 2,964 buses in the rest of the State.
As on date, the Transport Corporation earned a revenue of Rs 8.32 crore through 1.69 lakh ticket reservation across the State. For Deepavali festival, a total of 11,111 buses were operated from five places in the city on October 24 to 26, in which 6.70 lakh travelled, the release said. From CMBT, 2.83 lakh people travelled in 4,582 buses while 1.48 lakh travelled in 2,365 buses from Poo-namallee. From Tambaram, 1.71 lakh people travelled in 2,936 buses.
Meanwhile, the MTC would operate 100 special buses on Monday and Tuesday to help those re-turning to the temporary bus terminus at CMBT, Tambaram, Madhavaram, Poonamallee and KK Nagar to reach their destinations. Thirty-four buses would be operated from CMBT and 27 from Poonamallee. From Tambaram MEPZ, 23 buses would be operated, while eight buses each would be operated from Madhavaram New Bus Terminus and KK Nagar terminus.
