Iran reports 49 new virus deaths

Tehran, March 8: Iran’s health ministry on Sunday reported 49 new deaths from the novel Covid-19, the highest toll within 24 hours since the start of the outbreak in the Islamic Republic.

The new count brings the number of those killed by the virus in the country since mid-February to 194, one of the highest tolls outside of China, where the disease originated. The virus has spread to all of Iran’s 31 provinces with 6,566 confirmed cases.

French toll up 5 to 16 Paris, March 8: Another five people have died from the Covid-19 in France bringing the total to 16, the health ministry has announced Saturday.

There were 45 people in intensive care, six more than when the last summary was issued on Friday, said the director general of health, Jerome Salomon.

South Africa’s tally at 3 Johannesbu­rg, March 8: The wife of South Africa’s first novel Covid-19 patient tested positive on Sunday becoming the third confirmed case in the country, the health authority said. All three of South Africa’s confirmed were in a group of 10 people who had travelled to Italy.

12 more in Singapore Singapore, March 8: A dozen new cases of Covid19 have been reported in Singapore, taking the total number of people infected by the virus in the country to 150, the Health Ministry here said on Sunday.

Out of the 12 new cases, nine are in critical condition in the intensive care units of hospitals. The latest infections bring Singapore’s total number of

Covid-19 cases to 150. A total of 60 of them are still hospitalis­ed, though their health is improving, the ministry said.
