Call for politician­s to ‘resist the temptation to finger point’

A SOCIAL media campaign kick-started by a local lawyer which encourages minority groups to share how they are feeling and to stand united is going viral.

Bhumika Khatri, a lawyer with leading legal firm Munro Leys, said she started the campaign on Thursday after the announceme­nt by Police Commission­er BrigadierG­eneral Sitiveni Qiliho that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces was being called in to assist following “threats made against minority groups who are now living in fear following recent political developmen­ts”.

She posted the hashtag #FijiIsUnit­ed and it began circulatin­g on Twitter right after the announceme­nt with social media users encouragin­g members of Fiji’s minority and major groups to support each other in the face of the alleged threats.

Ms Khatri said the campaign encouraged users to identify themselves and declare “we are safe with each other”.

“I started the #FijiIsUnit­ed campaign on Twitter after I read the statement from the Fiji Police Force that a decision had been made to call in the RFMF to assist the police with its operations,” she said.

“The police said that threats have been made against minority groups.

“However, I don’t feel threatened and I wanted to say this on social media and ask others to air their

UNITY Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube has called on politician­s to “resist the temptation to finger point, misinforme­d and lash out at their opponents”.

He made the comment in his Christmas message to all Fijians, and urged everyone to embrace love, peace and harmony this festive season.

“We appeal to the people of Fiji to remain calm and respect the democratic process and the rule of law,” he said.

“Let us celebrate the virtues of love, peace, harmony, and joy to all humankind on this Christmas.”

Mr Narube also took the time to thank all those who cast their ballots for him and his party in this year’s election.

“As we celebrate the salvation and the views.

“Nobody I know is aware of any such threats.”

Ms Khatri said the paramount concern everyone had was safety.

“I have always felt safe with my iTaukei brothers and sisters.

“A lot of the people I have talked to in the past few days have also shared similar sentiments.

“The majority of the posts that I have seen on social media also shared the same views.

“The grassroots people do not appear to be concerned for their safety.

“Of course, there might be a few instances here and there but I think these can be managed by the police themselves.”

She said she had been overwhelme­d with the response. hope through our Lord Jesus Christ this Christmas, Unity Fiji thanks our candidates, volunteers, and supporters in the 2022 election.

“I thank you for sharing in our vision of political change in Fiji where political choices should be on credible policies that will reduce poverty, narrow the income disparity between the rich and poor, and enrich our rural communitie­s through the developmen­t of natural resources.

“The seeds that we have sown will grow and bring hope for a brighter, fairer, and peaceful future for our children and grandchild­ren. Unity Fiji believes that the fairer sharing of economic prosperity by everyone will provide a stronger foundation of political stability to this beloved country. Unity Fiji wishes everyone and your families a blessed Christmas and the hope of a joyous new dawn. May God bless us all this Christmas.”
