New ‘Deans’ winners

FIJI secondary schools rugby history is expected to be rewritten tomorrow in the grade finals of the Vodafone Super Deans Championship at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The Sugar City is expected to come alive as its sporting complex record its second biggest crowd of the year after the Fijian Drua Super Rugby Pacific mouth-watering clash against the Chiefs.

And the schools’ last get together of the year is heading towards a sellout like the semifinals in Nadi last weekend, said Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union general secretary Setareki Tuicakau said.

“We urge fans to be early,” he said.

“Our secondary schools following by fans is unique. There are strong following in grade teams unlike other sporting spectators where they sit and watch the day’s proceedings. In the Vodafone Super Deans Championship, fans follow their teams. What is exciting this week is the following behind the Southern Division teams such as Marist Brothers High School and Suva Grammar School. They have very huge fan bases and the challenge their teams bring into the finals will rock Churchill Park.

“Fans should come early. We are closely working with the Fiji Police Force on security and welfare of players, officials and fans. We have prepared well, the ground is ready and the games committee is working closely with Police and stakeholders for an entertaining, safe and memorable day of rugby finals.

“The history of secondary schools rugby will be written because we will have some new grade champions such as the under-14, U19, the Raluve Championship for the first time, and the U8 final between Marist and Suva Grammar.”

The Fiji Police Force have warned would-be-trouble makers before, during and after the finals that they would be taken to task if caught breaking the law.

This follows allegations of stoning of buses and water spilling on fans returning to Suva from the semi-finals last Saturday. The Vodafone Super Deans Championship finals: Under-14: RKS v MBHS, U15: RKS v QVS, U16: QVS v SGS, U17: SGS v MBHS, U19: Ra High v Rt Navula, U18: SGS v MBHS. Raluve Championship: U16: Sigatoka Methodist v Naitasiri, U18: Natabua v Jasper Williams.
