Go Fiji, go
ALOT of attention will no doubt be focused on 7s rugby today. Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor yesterday confirmed our squad for the defence of the Olympic Games gold medal will be announced today.
National coach Gareth Baber, by now, already appreciates the weight on his shoulders.
He knows he carries the hopes and aspirations of a nation, and knows his announcement would attract massive interest.
This is what we have been waiting for.
How can we ever forget the euphoria that erupted when the whistle was blown for the final time at the final of the gold medal clash against Great Britain in Rio de Janeiro in 2016?
How can anyone forget the joy and great pride that enveloped Fijians around the world?
We were united.
We embraced the moment, and lived our dreams. Every player that day, led by skipper Osea Kolinisau carried our hopes and aspirations with pride and confidence.
That moment at the very start when Kolinisau shaped that little smile, gave us confidence and anticipation of good tidings.
The rest, as they say, is history.
We played with flair.
We dazzled the world, and rocked the Google search engine.
We were watched by millions of people around the world.
We etched our name on the minds of millions of sports followers, probably converting many to the game they say is
That moment will go down in the annals of Fiji rugby history as a special moment.
We won our first gold medal.
We stood out as the best on the planet, in arguably the greatest, most viewed, and followed sporting event. Baber is now set to live our dreams once more.
He will announce our warriors who will take on the best in the world in Tokyo, Japan.
“People have dreams and we try to facilitate those dreams,” Baber said.
“We try to move them along to reach a certain level, but we know the reality is, there has been a huge amount of investment that has gone in to producing this team to where it needs to be to win a gold medal.”
Baber said it had brought the decision to a personal level, one that he has labelled the hardest choices he has faced in his career.
It has to be.
A nation is waiting in anticipation.
We look forward to the announcement today with great interest.
Go Fiji, go.
