Focus on recycling

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

WASTE Recyclers Fiji Ltd (WRFL) has applauded Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment, Dr Mahendra Reddy’s statement about importance of recycling in Fiji.

“While these are steps in the right direction and we are happy that there are discussions on recycling, we encourage more consultation to understand the work that some of us who are engaged in recycling do,” said Joseph Inoke, WRFL public relations consultant. “WRFL has been in this industry for over 25 years and we encourage a closer collaboration as we are the only company in Fiji working on the collection and processing of a wide range of recyclables such as cardboard, plastic, plastic bottles, tin cans, alum cans, paper, glass bottles and other recyclables,” said Mr Inoke.

He said while some companies claimed to do recycling, they actually concentrated on scrap metal and scrap metal dealers should not be confused with recyclers.

“Our identity and vision is very clear. We don’t deal with actual rubbish but only recyclables.”

WRFL is also actively exploring upcycling; that is taking recyclables and converting them into another product which is add value to the lives of the community.

“A major part of our strategic planning is the Upcycling ideas we are currently working on with assistance and technical support of some expert consultants.

“This will ensure that recyclables collected are converted into another useful and needed product like turning plastics into building blocks.”
