Trend a worry for police force

- By LITIA CAVA

NON-COMMUNICABLE Diseases remain a grave concern for the Fiji Police Force, with the revelation yesterday that 16 of the 20 police officer deaths this year were related to a NCD.

Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau did not mince his words when he said NCDs was a worrying trend in the force.

He made the statement as families and friends of departed officers laid wreaths to honour their memories at the Fiji Police Remembrance Day held at the Police Special Response Unit in Nasinu.

OUT of 20 deaths recorded by the Fiji Police Force this year, 16 were related to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

This was revealed during the Fiji Police Force Remembrance Day yesterday.

During the official ceremony, Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said NCDs was a worrying trend in the force.

Ratu Epeli said police officers were constantly under public scrutiny and often had to bear the brunt of criticism from people who did not fully appreciate their work.

“There is always a high level of expectation from the public. Because the public demand nothing but the best from you all and you have to deliver,” he said.

He said stress of work could have multiple effects on an officer’s work and personal life.

“The impacts of these challenges are often reflected in service delivery and community or public expectations. It is crucial that we have a supportive network behind the force, from senior officers and management to families and friends.”

Ratu Epeli said the day was a time for reflection and appreciation of the sacrifices of those who had been called to eternal rest.

“It is also a time to ensure that those who continue to serve our communities are given our full support.”
