Tropical cyclone alert

-

NOT the happy ending that Fijians had anticipated at the conclusion of Christmas and Boxing Day as Tropical Cyclone Sarai is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and flooding in low-lying areas.

While evacuation centres are on standby, it is important that Fijians take heed of the cyclone warning and prepare accordingly by storing and boiling drinking water, moving away from flood prone areas, staying away from fallen power lines and postponing social gatherings and events for the safety of everyone.

It is important to keep warm clothes if going to an evacuation centre and ensuring the safety of children, infants, the disabled, pregnant women and the elderly.

Power cuts will be frequent so having matches, batteries for radio and candles will do no harm.

Parents must also ensure that children are not left to wander around rivers and seas as they will be tempted to swim and risk the danger of drowning.

Elders must take note of emergency contacts, buy tinned food, fuel their vehicles and prepare a medical kit in case a family member gets sick.

Finally, movement must be restricted unless going to an evacuation centre. Let’s join hands to prepare for TC Sarai and prevent any casualty from occurring.

Finally, a big vinaka vakalevu to the National Disaster Management Office staff, police, military, and members of the media for all the work done to ensure the safety of all Fijians! Job well done, people! RAJNESH ISHWAR LINGAM Nadawa, Nasinu
