Keep vehicles safe

- By LOSALINI VUKI

IT'S always important to keep road safety tips at the top of one’s mind this festive season. Christmas is one of the most wonderful times of the year but it's also a time when road accidents are more likely to occur because of speeding or drunk drivers.

If you're driving around for some last minute shopping or meeting up with your family and friends, be careful around other drivers this Christmas season and take safety precautions.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued some vehicle safety checks before setting out on a long journey.

LTA chief executive officer Samuel Simpson said drivers should check for sufficient fuel, oil and coolant.

Mr Simpson said tyres need to be correctly inflated, damage free and have sufficient tread depth across all of its contact surface.

"Clean your windscreen, check washer bottle and the condition of wipers," he said.

"Check the operation of temperature, fuel guages and check the spare wheel inflated is secured and in good condition. Also check under your vehicle for obvious fluid leaks. Ensure all your exterior lights are fully functional including stop lights. Make sure your car has had a service with a comprehensive safety check within a reasonable time frame prior to setting off. Find your car's spare key and keep it with you in case you lose the one you are using."

He adds if you find any issues, call your mechanic — better to be safe than sorry.

Meanwhile director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra says driving behaviour is so important this festive season.

"Attitude needs to change when you're on the road," he said.

"I want to remind and urge motorists to respect the rules and others who use the road."
