Primed for right career paths
CHOOSING the right subject combination can be a daunting task.
The decision becomes harder when students are unsure of their capabilities, therefore the idea of involving Year 10 students in University Open Days can be a push forward to help them settle upon the subjects in Year 11 that correlates with their preferred career path.
Many a times, students find in later years that the subjects they chose in Year 11 didn’t favour the career path they were ambitious about.
This leaves some students scrambling at the last moment for alternative career pathways while some ruin their future because of poor decision-making.
Introducing Year 10 students to Open days can encourage first hand understanding of the world of work and help broaden horizons.
Visiting such events can become an eye opener to learn about the field they want to pursue and the subject combination needed the following year.
“Creating such opportunities at Year 10 level will be good for the child,” said Semi Bilitaki, the manager of the Careers and Entrepreneurial Centre at the University of the South Pacific.
Open days will provide these young minds with factual data about subjects and job opportunities available in the future, as well as discuss their views about different subject combinations, describing to them what the job market looks like.
Students need to know beforehand which professions are in demand and which fields have saturated.
This concept can become a hallmark of success that will aim for more learned choices to be made by students in terms of career pathways.
