Taveuni now has standard crematorium
This project was possible after the Taveuni Multiracial Land Cooperative demarcated a land area to allow development
Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar’s strong support has been attributed to the opening of a new crematorium in Taveuni to serve people on the island.
The FijiFirst Party member in opening the crematorium last Thursday thanked all donors who made it possible for Taveuni to finally have high standard crematorium.
She labelled it as a much needed development for Naiyalayala Settlement residents and Taveuni as a whole.
This project was possible after the Taveuni Multiracial Land Cooperative Limited demarcated a land area to allow development.
Cooperative secretary, Anil Shankaran, said the crematorium was possible through their members contribution and assistance from Ms Kumar.
He said their members proposed the idea to ensure facilities fit for funeral services were developed for everyone’s benefit.
At least $50,000 was spent during the construction phase. Members raised funds and contributed to get initial construction started.
“Ms Kumar was able to arrange monetary donors from overseas to help complete the project,” Shankaran, said.
“In 2019, during her visit to Taveuni, a request for monetary assistance was made.” The crematorium is open for all people in Taveuni, however, burial services will be offered to cooperative members only and about 200 residents of Naiyalayala Settlement will benefit from the development. Mr Shankaran said the project catered for a well sheltered seating area to provie safety from the heat and rain. “A proper sheltered waiting area and car parking area has been developed for the public to use during funeral services,” he said.
