Intimacy Of Farmer’s Daughter Attracts TV Anchor
Atelevision presenter who says she is not ashamed to work hard for what she wants, is chasing her dreams.
Fiji Television Limited’s news anchor Cheerieann Wilson, began her career in journalism at Fiji Sun in the early 2000s, but always wanted to be a television journalist.
The opportunity presented itself a few years after she joined this newspaper.
“After seven years with Fiji Television Ltd, I moved across to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in 2016, to start a news service,” Ms Wilson said.
“I helped put a team together, and got Click TV PNG’s news service going.
“I am forever indebted to Richard Broadbridge for that opportunity.”
Ms Wilson said she helped close a PGK3.2 million (FJ$1.94 million) deal for television satellite services in the Gulf Province.
“That process taught me things I would never learn in classrooms,” she said.
“On Sundays, I would be summoned to meetings that included the Governor and lawyers.
“Before any meeting, I researched so much, and even read up on etiquette.”
Ms Wilson said the Papua New
Guinea society was a hierarchy of masculinity, which compelled her to succeed.
“A year later, I was approached by EMTV to head their sales team,” she said.
“But God had other plans.
“I landed a job at the Oil Search Foundation instead.”
Oil Search Foundation is the development arm of Oil Search; one of Papua New Guinea’s largest companies.
“One day, as I stood in one of the board rooms looking out onto one of the streets in Port Moresby, it dawned on me that I never imagined I’d be working in one of Oil Search offices,” Ms Wilson said.
She returned to Fiji three years after the invaluable experience, to rejoin Fiji Television, where she is the news presenter.
Ms Wilson also trains news staff members.
She served as communications manager for We Rise Coalition.
When the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit Fiji, Ms Wilson was presented with the opportunity to produce Fiji One’s first weekend morning show.
“To be in a position to help others this way, is a huge blessing, and should never be taken lightly.”
