ACS BABY DEATH
Pau Lalaciwa
A lot has been said about this story claiming the headline was inappropriate, with families, friends and ex scholars voicing their disgust, feeling the school was unfairly targeted.
And knowing how passionate we are about our schools, I totally understand.
I myself hold ACS with great respect in its achievement over the years through academic & sports arenas and this article hasn’t tarnished that image at all for me personally.
Not even the slightest.
Headlines are meant to grab attention & the fact that we are talking about it means it worked!
The story though raises two (there’s more) very important issues for me :
1. Proper Sex education amongst our kids. At what age should we talk to our kids about sex? Primary? Secondary? Whose duty is it? Parents? Teachers? Church elders/Pastors? Do these individuals have the necessary tools to effectively teach?
2. Opening up channels for discussion/ conversation. The young girl carried the baby for nine months. Families, friends, classmates, teachers... No one knew. Why couldn’t she talk to anyone?
A newborn has passed.
A young girl’s world is in pieces after now having to face the reality of her actions, one that’s most probably filled with regret.
And instead of being petty with school names & the finger pointing, let us look around us and see how we can make changes so that this sort of incident never happens again.
I send my condolences to the family, a big hug to the young girl, and lastly, ai loloma masu vei kemudou na gonevuli , qasenivuli kei kemuni na dauniveiqaravi mai na ruku ni veidakua. (My prayers are with the students, teachers and guardians of the prestigious school)
Sa malo. x
