More than 200 People Treated to Ice Cream After Clean-up Campaign

- LAISA LUI Edited by Shratika Naidu

More than 200 people enjoyed ice cream after pitching in at a clean-up campaign in Savusavu Town on Saturday afternoon.

Savusavu Town Council chief executive officer, Seema Dutt said it was a great initiative that the council will carry out on a monthly basis. Ms Dutt said the clean-up campaign collected 60 bags filled with bottles, wrappers and other garbage.

“Every now and then we clean-up Savusavu, helping the town council maintain Savusavu as a clean town,” Ms Dutt said.

“Savusavu is a tourist town and it should be kept clean at all times.

“It would be best if people could utilise the bins available and not throw rubbish carelessly,” she said.

In an earlier interview, Provincial Administrator Cakaudrove, Setareki Dakuiboca said they’re hoping to pilot some projects in terms of recycling to be implemented using the Blue Town Model. Mr Dakuiboca hopes schools will help in their initiative to teach students the different ways of recycling and how to separate garbage. He said people were addressed on the importance of keeping Savusavu clean, recycling of waste material and supporting the environment. “It was a good turn out with the provision of a bus from Nukubalavu and Nacekoro villages to Savusavu town and return,” Mr Dakuiboca said.

“Participants received a free ice cream after the clean-up.

“It was good to see support from our business partners like Copra Shed, Jean Mitchel Cousteau Resort, and Rotary Club Savusavu. “This is in support of our Blue Town Model and the committee are planning to run this same programme next month,” he said.
