University of Fiji law student Anaseini Sanoko will advocate against racism and sexism. The 23-year old is among hopeful contestants vying for top honours in the week-long 2019 Fiji Airways Lautoka Farmers Carnival which starts today at Churchill Park.

She is sponsored by the Lautoka Sector. Originally from Sorokoba in Ba, Ms Sanoko said that apart from climate change she wish to raise other issues which affected society.

“I know that climate change is a global issue, but I believe that racism and sexism is also important that it needs to be critically considered,” she said.

“Sexism is discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender and it affects anyone.

“It has links to gender roles and may include the belief that one sex or gender is basically superior to another and racism is the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice.

“I am going to advocate that everyone needs to be treated with respect and as equal citizens.

“We have seen that in our society we tear people down, hurt them emotionally and spiritually. “Sometimes our religion and tradition can motivate discrimination against transgender.

“This is one issue that I will address during the upcoming

carnival.”

People are protected from discrimination in employment, education, housing, healthcare, adoption and public accommodation.

Ms Sanoko is excited and also looking forward to learn new things in the upcoming carnival.

The second year law student lists her hobbies as making new friends, reading, socialising, cooking and travelling.
