New Opportunities with Tax Holiday
Government has put its focus on giving companies a push to invest in pharmaceutical manufacturing right here, in Fiji.
A 13-year tax holiday was announced to entice companies to start producing medication and other pharmaceutical products in Fiji.
And, this is not as simple as it sounds.
Many opportunities opened up with this tax holiday. Medicine manufacturing has many different layers, from milling, coating, tablet pressing. Fiji has often relied on shipment from overseas countries from its medication. This meant relying on a third party for manufacturing, shipment, etc.
This also meant Fiji had very little control over external factors. But, with the right marketing on international platforms, Fiji has set the agenda to have international companies coming to Fiji to set up their manufacturing plants, or better still, have local companies thinking of diversifying into pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Fiji has one major pharmaceutical manufacturing company in the country.
This tax holiday will assist in growing this company as well if they plan to expand their services.
Apart from this tax-holiday, Fiji also has dedicated tax-free zones. And, if the company sets up a waste recycler as an off-shoot, further taxholidays are also provided. Furthermore, to support pharmaceutical manufacturers in Fiji, the importation of ethanol will now carry zero duty.
This business-friendly initiatives have been strategically provided to grow our local industries, but at the same time to attract new players from overseas.
What happens when new manufacturing plants are set up? Jobs are created, the rural-urban drift slows down if the industry is set up in a tax-free zone.
