Fijian boxers want more time with Lewis

The Fijian amateur boxing team for the 2019 Pacific Games hope to have more time with legendary Australian boxing trainer Johnny Lewis.

Four Fijian boxers which include Winston Hill are training in Australia and are seeking tips from Lewis.

Head coach Nicholas Fuata said he hopes to have an on going collaboration between our partners– Johnny Lewis and his One Dream team in Australia.

“For exchange of training techniques and ideas,” Fuata said.

“This will assist our fighters prepare well for the games.”

Fiji did not win a gold medal at the 2015 Pacific Games but settled for silver and a bronze medal. The boxers are aware of the challenge that is ahead of them and hopes to polish on their techniques and skills.

“Our boxers are training abroad at the Sydney University Boxing Club, I want to focus on producing quality in all facets of our preparation.

“This would include doing well in areas like strength and conditioning, ring generalship and the technical and technical aspects of boxing. Our target medal at any weight division but our focus now is preparing well for the Pacific Games.”

Sydney-based trainer Lepani Wilson said he was happy with the progress of the Fijian boxers

while training under Lewis and also fighting in the programmes there.

“Apart from Winston, the welterweight boxer Jone Koroilagilagi is another dynamite. He beat the top Australia amateur boxers in his weight category and is a king in that division,” Wilson added.
