Heleina picks up two top female athlete trophies
Heleina Young in her final year at St Joseph’s Secondary School came back better.
She not only broke two records, she also claimed the intermediate girls top athlete trophy and was named the best female athlete of the 2018 Coca-Cola Games. Young was disqualified in the 100 metre final two years ago when she was in Year 11. Manifesting SJSS theme this year, Civilisation In Love, Young after her collecting her trophies said picking up the top female athlete’s trophy was a humbling experience.
“This is team effort, what I picked up this evening belongs to everyone, our school, the teachers, students, alumni, our families and friends,” Young said.
“I guess my disqualification two years ago paved way to what we’ve achieved at the Cokes this year. I am humbled.”
She gave her spoils, cash prizes and sports equipment to head of physical education, music, arts and culture (PEMAC) Karalaini Seruiratu to take back to school. Like a true sportswoman she bounced back in the last two days breaking Younis Bese’s 2014 100 metres record of 12.01 secs after she clocked 11.87 secs. Yesterday afternoon she stopped the clock at 24.33 secs again in the 200m smashing Bese’s record of 24.72 secs.
While Young exits from the school in Waimanu Road at the end of this year SJSS rests her hopes on Year 12 Louisa Catherine Tubailagi come 2019 Fiji Finals.
Tubailagi is hopeful that by then the Josefa girls would have their first inter-house competitions to make up their squad in preparation for the most anticipated sports event in Fiji.
