Napuka thrower sets new record
Katarina Lilicama of Napuka Secondary School broke a three-year intermediate girl’s discus record during the second day of the Coca-Cola Games at the ANZ Stadium, Suva, yesterday.
She threw a distance of 37.10 metres to break the record of 35.12m set by Ana Baleira of Koro High School.
Lilicama also holds the Games javelin records in the junior division of 43.97m set in 2016 and the intermediate grade of 42.44m set last year.
The Savusavu native told SUNsports that she was confident of winning the gold medal and setting a new record.
“But for me javelin comes naturally compared to discuss,” she said.
“I normally use stones or sticks to throw at coconuts.”
Lilicama is part of the school’s 10-member squad for the Coke Games.
The Year 13 student said, she wants to end the year on a high note.
“Back in Savusavu, we don’t have the facilities to train like those here in Viti Levu. We rely on our natural talents which God gave us.
“Participating in the Cokes is every Fijian students dream and for me to set a record and win the gold is the best way to round up my years of participating in the most anticipated school event in Fiji.”
Lilicama dedicated her win to her parents, coaches and teachers.
“Although my parents are not here today I like to thank them for their support,” she added.
