TAKEN CHILD SAFE, POLICE SEARCH FOR ‘ABDUCTOR’
The mother of a baby boy alleged to have been abducted is still trying to come to terms of what happened and pondering who could have committed such an act.
Ulaila Itu, 33, of Bouma, Taveuni, Island gave birth to twin boys at the Labasa Hospital. The babies were in the ante-natal ward, when one of them was taken.
Mrs ltu first searched the hospital and when she could not find the baby, she informed the nurses. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said an unknown woman allegedly abducted one of the twins of a 33-year-old woman.
“Upon information received the baby was found abandoned at the back of the Vatunibale Police barracks in Labasa and the baby was safe,” Ms Naisoro said.
“We are still trying to determine the identity of the suspect as investigations continue.
“The woman is tall with a tan complexion and was wearing a black skirt and grey top with a short perm hair carrying a dark blue knapsack.”
When the Fiji Sun contacted Mrs Itu yesterday, she was still admitted at the Labasa Hospital and could not stop crying.
She was still trying to understand what had happened.
“Isa na luvequ (oh my son). I cannot comment or give details on the incident because I am still in shock about what happened,” she said.
Mahen Pratap, a taxi driver based at the Labasa Hospital for 15 years, said he and fellow taxi driver, Satish Chand saw a woman carrying the baby.
“She asked us to drop her, and it was between 12pm to 1pm,” Mr Pratap said.
“I was busy, and I told Mr Chand to drop her.
“Mr Chand informed me when the woman sat inside the taxi with the baby he kept asking her where she wanted to go.
“At first the woman was speechless and then she said Siberia and then she said drop her at the Police barracks at Vatunibale. “The drive to the Police barracks is approximately seven minutes. “Between 1pm to 2pm a hospital supervisor approached us asking about this particular woman and the baby so we provided her with the information,” Mr Pratap said. “We assisted her and the Police. After that a team of Police officers found the baby.
“This is the first time such an incident had happened with us.” Meanwhile, Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar said she was aware about the incident and would comment later after she was briefed by her team.
