Labasa School Finally Gets Teacher’s Quarters
Teachers are an integral part of the education system and we must ensure that their conditions of employment are conducive so they can give their best. Northern Divisional Education officer Selemo Drokamaisau made the statement while officially opening the new $30,000 two bedroom teacher’s quarters at Korowiri/Tovata Primary School in Labasa on Friday.
After 37 years since its establishment, the house is the first of its kind for the school. Previously, teachers arranged for their own accommodation when posted there.
The school is located 15 kilometres from Labasa Town
The new quarters was made possible through Government’s assistance.
“Upgrading and building of new buildings was always a burden for the school management. At times they had to bear some of the cost,” Mr Drokamaisau said. “However, this has changed so much today, thanks to the Government education grant. “I understand that most of the teachers are travelling a far distance to come to school.
“Now one teacher will be able to stay in the school compound and keep an eye on the school.
“I would like to thank the communities of Korowiri, Tovata, teachers and parents for their continuous support.
“As the school year is about to end, I would like to leave a food for thought for the students - ‘education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’.
“To change your community, choose education as this is the key.” Headteacher, Rajesh Kumar thanked Natika Construction Company for successfully completing the work on time.
The school roll from kindergarten to Year 8 is 70. Seven teachers serve at the school . Management will decide the occupant of the new quarters before the 2018 academic year starts.
