E-Card Goes Live

- SELITA BOLANAVANUA Edited by Naisa Koroi

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday launched the e-Transport card system at the Suva Bus Station. Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the initiative was a way of modernising Fiji with the usage of technologies.

He said Government was working closely with the financial institutions to have that level of connectivity and a more cashless society. It will also bring a lot of accountability and transparency. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that once the e-Ticketing of omnibuses worked well, there would be abilities to move onto minibuses, taxis and ferries between the Islands so we have have one mode of payment for fares.

There won’t be any need to carry a lot of cash.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum acknowledged the sponsors and all the teams that worked behind the success of the project.

Acting chief executive for Vodafone Fiji Ronald Prasad said the eTransport was safe, secure and easy to use.

“The platform provides better accountability and visibility over daily takings, helps reduce pilferage and provides information that can be analysed and used to improve services that will benefit stakeholders and the industry,” he said. Vodafone has 24/7 teams working behind the scene to ensure that there is minimal to no inconvenience caused by the transition. There are over 1200 top-up agent outlets around the country (see pages 16, 17 and 18). “The entire process will remain the same, except that you will now tap the card to transact as opposed, to handling over cash to the driver.” Head of Vodafone E-Commerce and Corporate Affairs Shailendra Prasad also commented saying that Vodafone was also working towards topping-up e-Transport cards via MPaisa.

He said it might be active from January next year.

Mr Prasad added that it was not an easy work to get the project done. To get more information on eTransport, you can visit any Vodafone outlet or dial 124 for FREE.
