Friends like these: Lions Club

-

O Nthis day, which the Lord our God has made, we the sporting fraternity will rejoice and be glad in it. We are upbeat and looking forward to the weeks and months ahead. On Friday, the Lions Club International of Manzini splashed out E50 000 towards Special Olympics Eswatini. This is for the organisation to create and spread awareness about people living with disabilities.

What a noble gesture by the Lions. We at the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) are grateful for this gift. It will go a long way in easing the burden of the Special Olympics office. We are aware that a majority of our National Sports Associations and organisations, struggle with day to day resources. They actually live from hand to mouth and when friends like Lions Club come to the rescue, we can only be happy and appreciative. Such a donation could not have come at a better time, really with the need to spread awareness critical. We would also like to heartily congratulate the Special Olympics Director, Ntombi Nkambule and her team for the effort that they put in.

Swimmers swimming with sharks

Team Eswatini is presently competing against the finest the region has to offer in Angola, where the Swimming Aquatics are ongoing. Led by well-travelled and experienced Coach, Welcome ‘Magejageja’ Nhlabatsi, the youngsters are gaining invaluable experience in that country and have already captured the imagination with a spirited showing. The country boasts of very young but exceptionally gifted swimmers. Small wonder a number of them have already broken their personal best times in the competition.

They are on track surely. It seems to be just a matter of time before they dominate the region, before going on to conquer the continent and indeed the rest of the world. Swimming as an association has done well too. We did say that the association has done very well to invest in these youngsters by exposing them to tougher competitions in the early stages of their careers. The association and indeed the nation, will be reaping the fruits of this soon

National Women Sports Day here

The day we are all waiting for is edging closer and closer. On Saturday next week, all roads will lead to the Technical Centre in Lobamba for the historic National Women Sports Day. It pleases us to reaffirm our stance that the organisation is on track to delivering this great event to our people. It’s been too long since we celebrated the fairer sex.

The devastating effects of COVID-19 are still haunting us even today. So many opportunities were indeed lost during the scourge. Upon the realisation that women are among the most marginalised groups in our society, being denied equal opportunities in sports participation, we decided to have a day reserved for them. It is a day meant to celebrate our women. This day therefore is a festival. Just for women. The Women In Sport Programme, does not only seek to encourage women to partake in sports but is meant to create awareness that women deserve equal opportunities as well. It is one of our programmes.

Registration for Women Day still on

We have already sent out invitations to some corporate companies to be part of the National Women Sports Day. Registration to the event is still open. Companies and organisations should just fill the form attached with their invitations and return these.

Remember, registration is free of charge. We would also like to clarify that this is an open event. This in essence means anyone can take part. One does not need a formal invitation. Members of the public should just come in their numbers to have the time of their lives.

Until next week; sports for all; sports for life!
