- By Sibusiso Masilela

The country’s richest club tournament first prize remains the same in the E3.4 million sponsorship package per year

The Ingwenyama Cup first prize money remains unchanged as champions for the prestigious knockout tournament will take home a E1.4 million carrot.

The money is part of the E3.4 million sponsorship package that was announced during the launch held at the Kings Offices at Nkhanini in September.

The country’s richest knockout tournament will finally return this year after a two-year absence due to the Covid threat with Green Mamba being the defending champions after they clinched the 2020 edition with a 2-0 win over Mbabane Highlanders at Somhlolo National Stadium in front of over 10 000 fans.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma was the main guest during the last edition which was also graced by the tournament patron His Majesty King Mswati III. The final of the last edition was shown live on the Supersport payper-view channel.

A source close to the matter revealed that the decision to maintain the same first prize money was taken during a Management Committee meeting held on Friday afternoon at Sigwaca House.

“The MC has met to discuss logistics of the tournament and it was decided that the prize money for champions will remain at E1.4 million. The full breakdown will be released in due course together with kickoff dates,” the source said.

Ingwenyama Cup Public Relations Officer (PRO) Nkosilenhle Masuku could not be reached for comment at the time of compiling this report. He did not return messages sent on his mobile phone and numerous calls were made between 4 pm and 7 pm. Other previous winners include capital city giants Mbabane Swallows who are the most successful team in the tournament with a treble while army side Young Buffaloes have won it once together with the defending champions.

Eliminations for the 2023 edition regional tournament are already underway within the four regions.

Northern Hhohho outfit Msumpe Manchester are the last winner of the regional instalment.
