NREA to launch tender for 20MW solar power plant in Hurghada in September

-

The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) will be bidding for the construction of a solar power plant in Hurghada with a capacity of 20MW next month.

A government source told Daily News Egypt that the tender includes the implementation of a solar PV-battery system. The battery system is used to supply the national grid with power during rush hours and at night.

The plant is the first of its kind in Egypt.A technical and economic feasibility study for the station was completed.

The project is funded by a $85m facilitated loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which includes the creation of an environmentally friendly information centre (Zero Energy Building) and it uses renewable energy to feed it.

The source added that the centre will be equipped with all the necessary modern equipment in order to act as a global training centre for workers in this area from the private and public sectors, in addition to establishing a conference hall that accommodates up to 120 people.

The projected capacity is about 30GW/h,saving about 7,000 tonnes of oil equivalent and limiting the emission of about 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The Ministry of Electricity is seeking to produce 20% of electricity through new and renewable sources by 2022, through competitive bidding and feed-in tariff projects of 1,465MW, with up to $2.5bn investments.

NREA grants lands for the implementing company under usufruct for 25 years. These projects are part of the Ministry of Electricity’s five-year plan 2017-2022 and within the government’s plan to diversify sources of energy and achieve sustainable development.
