STRAP on your swordbelt and give your little grey cells the night off. Pay attention to Hercules, an ancient conman trying to drum up business for his gang of mercenaries with inflated tales of his divine parentage and mythical exploits.

This is a disguised version of the Hollywood Western The Magnificent Seven which in turn began life as a Japanese heroic epic The Seven Samurai. Just as Yul Brynner’s band of mixed cowboy warriors, contract to save a Mexican village from bandits, so Hercules sets out to protect the ancient kingdom of Thrace. Hercules is played by Dwayne Johnson, a muscular professional wrestler called The Rock. His sidekicks include a seer alias old timer Ian McShane, a wisecracking, knife thrower played by Rufus Sewell and a beautiful Swedish archer alias Ingrid Bolso Berdal. The king of Thrace is played by John Hurt and Joseph Fiennes is a rival monarch.

Directed by Brett Ratner in 2014 from a comic book written by Steve Moore.

Radio Times said: “Ratner finds the correct balance between self-deprecating humour, heart and epic Cecil B DeMille-style action. Cracks in the narrative are papered over with incredibly exciting battle scenes that send the adrenaline racing.”
