Doctor launches ‘Beautiful’ show
A STENCIL and print artwork show by artist and academic Dr Erdoğan Ergün launched at the capital’s Near East University Faculty of Medicine exhibition hall on Thursday which will run until Friday, January 10.
His third North Cyprus exhibition, “Beautiful”, a collection of 20 portraits, develops the Ankara-born artist’s distinctive style of graffiti and poster art which he has also created for public spaces.
Dr Ergün, in a statement about the works said: “The philosophy of my work is beautiful/beauty and my quest on this object. ‘Beauty and beautiful’ take their forms in human beings.
What makes an object beautiful for a human being is the value he places on the object.
“The concept of ‘beauty and beautiful’ for the human being is considered together with the concepts of pleasant, good, wonderful, sweet, perfect, useful or right, because for humans, the concept of beauty does not occur without these concepts.
“This exhibition ‘Beautiful’, which I approached with artistic concerns and prepared using the unique visual language of the graphic, consists of my template print pictures.
“I have been working on portraits for a long time. The reason I choose portraits is . . . the artists aim to reflect the person’s portrait’s characteristic features, mimics and mood in their works while making the portrait. A successful portrait not only provides a visual presentation, but also gives information about the person’s spirit and entity.
“Portraits can also provide information about a person’s status in social life, hobbies or work, personality traits or beliefs. Portraits are an interface in which we can interact with the inner worlds of people.”
Head of graphic design and
Vice Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Near East University, Dr Ergün graduated from Hacettepe University before teaching at Akdeniz University and relocating to North Cyprus in 2006.
His first exhibition, in the capital, was followed four years ago by a second, “Cutting Edge”, at Girne’s Art Rooms gallery.
Dr Ergün’s latest show can be visited all week on weekdays from 8am until 4pm.
