Major English competitio­n comes to Hangzhou

The finals of the “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competitio­n will be held at the Hangzhou Internatio­nal Expo Center in Zhejiang province from Friday to Sunday. As one of the largest of its kind in China, the national competitio­n attracted more than 1 million student participan­ts last year.

Pupils to learn how to avoid stock market pitfalls

Chinese primary school textbooks may soon include definition­s for terms like “price-to-earnings ratio” or “buy and hold” as the country embarks on a campaign to improve investor awareness. The Ministry of Education and China Securities Regulatory Commission said they will work together to “increase financial literacy” among the youth. Officials said the campaign to improve understand­ing of the country’s securities and futures markets would begin with textbooks for primary and middle schools.

The 17th Guangzhou Internatio­nal Documentar­y Film Festival has started accepting submission­s worldwide. The festival will be held from Dec 9 to 12 in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and the deadline for applicatio­ns is Aug 31. It has been held annually since 2003. Last year, it received 4,542 submission­s from 122 countries and regions.

Death raises concern over online health products

The sudden death of a Beijing woman who had been taking healthcare products from Nu Skin, a direct-selling company, to treat symptoms of fever has raised questions about the direct-sales industry.
