It was the first time that China had granted “fifth freedom rights” to a foreign air carrier in the cargo market.

Fifth freedoms, also known as “beyond rights”, give an airline the right to carry passengers and cargo from a country to a second country, and from that country to a third country.

The opening of such rights will help the country enhance its competitiv­e advantage as a regional hub.

The Civil

Aviation Administra­tion of China in 2006 opened all flight rights to Hong Kong and fifth freedom rights were granted to major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou in Guangdong province and Haikou in Hainan province.

In 2007, Air China Cargo opened its first fifth freedom route from Shanghai and Beijing to Manchester in the United Kingdom via Copenhagen, Denmark.
