Speed limit near school in Stoney Point being reduced

- DALSON CHEN

Drivers on Comber Sideroad in Stoney Point will need to be more mindful of their speedometers.

Lakeshore’s town council has agreed to a community safety zone on the roadway near the French-catholic elementary school at 840 Comber Sideroad — permanently reducing the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.

At a Town of Lakeshore council meeting on Tuesday, Coun. Linda Mckinlay said a student at Saintpaul school contacted the municipality about the matter.

“Thank you to a young man named Jackson Sales who brought this to our attention,” she said.

The new speed limit applies to Comber Sideroad (County Road 2) from St. Clair Road in the north to Tecumseh Road (County Road 35) in the south.

Ecole elementaire catholique Saint-paul is one of only two schools in the area that currently lack community safety zones around them.

The other school is also in Stoney Point — Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Elementary School at 7343 Tecumseh Rd., which is County of Essex jurisdiction.

Town of Lakeshore administration is communicating with the County of Essex about creating a similar community safety zone in that section of Tecumseh Road.

In a report to town council, administration said the new speed limit on Comber Sideroad will be a continuation of the initiative to have community safety zones wherever children are at risk due to traffic volumes, walking to school, or being dropped off or picked up at school.
