2018Toyota Camry, continued from E1

The changes internally are just as much of a radical departure from previous models as the exterior. The fit and finish are far more refined with material choices much more upscale than we have seen previously.

The dash is uncluttered with the drivers instrumentation and infotainment display being divided by a swooshing “S” that not only separates the drivers controls but manages to make the drivers foot well appear wider as well.

The Camry comes with a multitude of new technologies all controlled from the centrally mounted seven- or eight-inch Entune 3.0 Audio multimedia system display. The system is independent of Apple Car Play and Android Auto, but offers very similar functionality that uses downloaded apps such as the Scout GPS Link for navigation.

Ride quality has been vastly improved with the addition of the new double wishbone rear suspension, stiffer chassis and the lower centre of gravity.

In both the L and S series the ride quality is far superior than it was in previous models, steering is precise with good road feel.

On the S series the suspension has been tightened up making steering that little bit crisper especially when going into corners.

The four-cylinder engine does make a bit of a grunt at the low end when pulling away, but when up to speed is smooth and quiet while the 3.5-litre V6 is quicker off the line and is smooth all the way through the mid range and purrs along at highway speeds.

The hybrid is marginally quicker off the mark than the fourcylinder and is as smooth and as quiet as you would expect.

The Camry features Toyota Safety Sense P as standard equipment. It uses a camera and radar to detect a forward collision and comes with pedestrian detection. It also includes lane departure/keep assist, dynamic cruise control and auto high beams.

The new Camry seems to be everything Toyota wanted it to be.

It certainly appeals to the loyal customers with the L series and the new S series is sexy enough to attract the younger crowd, but will it be enough to stop the flow to SUV’s?

I would like to think so.
