Shawn Conner outlines five reasons why seeing the former Hüsker Dü member’s show will be interesting.

1. It’s a solo show.

From his decade with underground hardcore/ post-punk trio Hüsker Dü to his years with ’90s hitmakers Sugar, Bob Mould has influenced generations of musicians. His Vancouver show is one of three West Coast dates and a rare chance to see him play solo, accompanied by his own masterful electric guitar playing.

2. Hüsker Dü.

No word on whether he will be doing songs from his 10 years in the legendary Minneapolis outfit. But at least two factors favour such a move. One is that the solo-electric format of the show allows him to do whatever he wants (and can remember). Also, the untimely death (at 56) in September of his former Hüsker Dü bandmate, Grant Hart, means that Mould will probably be more keen to revisit his past than he previously has been.

3. Sugar.

All the recent nostalgia, including the release of early recordings, for Mould’s first band has overshadowed his second. But, lest we forget, Sugar delivered some of the songwriter’s best tracks, including Hoover Dam, Changes, and If I Can’t Change Your Mind.

4. Patch the Sky.

Beginning with 1989’s Workbook, Mould has released nearly a dozen solo albums. Seattle’s The Stranger writes that his most recent, 2016’s Patch the Sky, “is true to this form and harks back to Sugar more than any of his solo albums yet.”

5. Ford Pier.

One of the Vancouver music scene’s MVPs, Pier is an avowed Hüsker Dü fan. The guitarist/songwriter is sure to put on a duly impassioned show.
