Cougars scary good at Hallowe’en Classic
TRURO, N.S. – The CEC boys volleyball team won the annual West Kings Hallowe’en Classic tournament, defeating the host Wolverines in straight sets (2517, 25-13) in the gold medal match.
The Cougars went undefeated for the second consecutive tournament with round-robin wins over Westisle (25-18, 257), West Kings (26-24, 25-11), Avonview (25-10, 25-11), and Dartmouth (225-20, 25-17). In playoff action, the Cougars notched straight set victories over Sir John a Macdonald (2513, 25-9) in the quarter-finals and Three Oaks (25-17, 25-13) in a semifinal match.
Next up for the 33-6 Cougars is the annual Dartmouth High Spartans Invitational.
GIRLS
The CEC varsity girls volleyball team captured the Sydney Academy invitational tournament last week.
The Cougars defeated Riverview in the final (25-17, 23-25, 15-9), avenging an earlier loss to the Reds in round-robin play (25-13, 12-25, 7-15).
The JV Cougars finished third with a straight-sets win over
Inverness in the bronze medal match. This is the fourth time in the last five years the Varsity Cougars have won the Sydney Academy tournament.
The varsity girls finished second in their pool with a 2-1 record. They had straight-set wins over Sydney Academy (2513, 25-19) and SAERC (26-24, 25-17) and a close three-set loss to Riverview. They defeated Dr. J.H. Gillis 21-25, 25-21, 15-7 in the quarter finals and the CEC JVS (25-16, 25-15) in the semifinals.
The JV Cougars finished first in their pool with straight-set wins over Gillis #1, Glace Bay and Memorial, and a threeset win over Inverness. They defeated Sydney Academy in straight sets in the quarter-finals to advance to the semifinals.
Hannah Huntley and Mia Maloney were selected tournament all-stars, while Abbie Archibald was tournament MVP.
Both CEC teams have the Remembrance Day weekend off and resume tournament play the following weekend with the JVS competing in the NSSAF regionals on Nov. 15 and the Varsity Cougars playing in the Parkview Invitational Nov. 1516.
