Bowls are now on display for the 5th annual Bowls for Balance event in Truro.

The popular fundraiser is held at SOUP Café, 563 Prince St., to raise funds for the Colchester-East Hants branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Attendees get a unique bowl and a meal for $25.

“I always wanted to do a fundraiser like this, but there are a lot of rules around food preparation,” said Danielle Sawada, who owns Thrown Together Pottery. “At SOUP they make food, so it was an ideal partnership.”

Sawada, her students, and other Nova Scotia potters donate handmade bowls for the event.

“A lot of people come to classes here for mental health reasons, so it’s a really good flow,” said Sawada. “It’s a good cause, so I’ll do this as long as I’m here and they’re here.”

Bowls for Balance takes place May 23 and 24, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., with 50 bowls available each day. Those who are first in line have first choice in bowls, so some people show up early to get one they have their eye on, and the event sells out each year. Bowls are $25, and come with a meal and a hot beverage. There are vegan, vegetarian and meat options. If someone doesn’t have time to sit down and eat during the event, they can take a gift certificate and eat at a later date, or use it as a gift. Funds raised go toward programming and services run by the Colchester-east Hants Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
