Grey’s Anatomy star Pompeo wants show to end
The star of one of television’s biggest and most enduring shows is trying to end it.
Ellen Pompeo says she’s ready for medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to end after 18 seasons on ABC – even if she’s the only one.
“I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end,” the Golden Globe-nominated actress said during an interview.
“I feel like I’m the super-naive one who keeps saying: ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?’ ” she said.
“And everyone’s like: ‘Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.’ ”
The medical drama, created by Shonda Rhimes, is a ratings draw for the Disneyowned broadcast network.
Pompeo, who stars as Dr. Meredith Grey and is also a producer on the show, is one of the highest-paid actors on American TV following contract negotiations in 2017.
The 52-year-old Massachusetts native reportedly makes $575,000 US per episode.
She revealed to the Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that Grey’s Anatomy has generated nearly $3 billion for Disney.
“When your face and your voice have been part of something that’s generated $3 billion for one of the biggest corporations in the world, you start to feel like: ‘OK, maybe I do deserve a piece of this.’ ”
The new interview isn’t the first time the ex-L’Oreal hair colour pitchwoman expressed a desire to end the series.
“I mean, I’ve been trying to get away for years,” Pompeo told Entertainment Tonight this year.
“I have been trying. It’s not because I haven’t been trying.
I have strong relationships at the network and they have been very, very good to me, and have incentivized me to stay.
“Miraculously, we keep coming up with ways to have a reason to stay and if there’s a reason, that warrants it,” Pompeo said.
