Camosun’s Galitzine stars on the court, in classroom

The Camosun College Chargers handed out their annual athletic award awards Tuesday night and leading the way was star volleyball player Stephanie Galitzine.

Galitzine, a outside hitter with the Chargers whose play earned her a Pacwest Player of the Week Award in 2018, was awarded the President’s Cup for her outstandin­g academic and athletic achievemen­ts. Galitzine posted a perfect 9.0 grade-point average this season and was a winner of a CCAA National Scholar award. Galitzine, and teammate Katie Wayling, also started a community health promotion initiative called I Am Strong, aimed at empowering young girls to promote and create positive exercise experience­s that foster self-confidence and emphasize social connection through movement and conversati­on.

The Derek Twomey Scholarshi­p for Sport was awarded to third-year Chargers men’s volleyball setter Mack Mravnik. The Winnipeg product was selected for his work ethic, drive to win and teamwork.

Team MVP awards went to Megan Ireland (women’s volleyball), Ella Goldschmid (women’s basketball) Jerome Cross (men’s volleyball), Mathew Hampton (men’s basketball) and Mike Flegel (men’s golf).

Rookie of the Year awards went to Grace Kazanowski (women’s volleyball), Dale MacDonell (men’s volleyball), Lacey Reay (women’s basketball) and Isaiah Romanow (men’s basketball).
