A man in a stolen three-quarter-ton pickup truck created his own demolition derby Wednesday with a pair of police vehicles in the Yellow Point area.

The man drove the truck onto the hoods of two unmarked vehicles, destroying both of them.

Two Nanaimo RCMP officers received minor injuries.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien described the incident as “bizarre.”

“We’ve had cars rammed, but never to this extent,” he said, adding that it was lucky the officers weren’t more seriously hurt. “They could have been killed.” Officers spotted the stolen pickup on Roberts Road, in Yellow Point north of Ladysmith, about 8 a.m.

As one officer approached in his unmarked car, the truck was driven onto the hood and then driven off, police said.

A few minutes later, the same pickup came upon a second unmarked car.

Once again, the driver drove the truck up onto the car’s hood.

But this time, the truck became stuck.

Two men in the truck fled on foot.

Police soon arrested a 47-yearold man and a 32-year-old man with help from a police dog and the RCMP Emergency Response Team.

The 47-year-old man received several dog bites and was taken to hospital for treatment. He was taken into custody after being released from hospital.

The other man was taken to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment and placed in custody.

Police said both men are facing a number of Criminal Code and driving-related charges.
