Milne work donated to art gallery’s new wing

-

Victoria philanthropist Patrick Stewart has donated a 1927 painting by artist David Milne to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

The painting is titled Entrance To Saugerties Harbour. It will eventually be displayed in The NEXT Gallery, a planned new wing of the AGGV.

A similar painting by Milne recently sold at auction for $260,000.

Milne, who died in 1953, was a prominent Canadian painter, writer and printmaker.

American art critic Clement Greenberg described him as one of the greatest North American artists of his generation.

Stewart plans to donate several other pieces from his personal collection in coming years.

Stewart’s collection includes paintings by Jack Wilkinson, Jean McEwan, Herbert Siebner, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Harold Klunder, Philip Surrey and William Perehudoff and Joseph Plaskett.

Several sculptures will also be donated, including works by Wayne Ngan, Gathie Falk, Gordon Smith and Elza Mayhew.

“I want the public to be able to enjoy these paintings and sculptures as much as my family has over the years,” Stewart said.

“Patrick Stewart has long been a philanthropic leader in Victoria’s arts community and we thank him for his generous support of The NEXT Gallery Project,” said Ruth Wittenburg, AGGV board chairwoman.
