From a rusty hulk to timeless beauty

- TOM STEVENOT

I am the owner of this 1939 Chevy Sedan Delivery.

The car was purchased from Bruce Smith on Salt Spring Island in 2002. At that time, the car was missing some key parts, such as the fenders.

The grill and bumper were there and intact, but were rusted and needed work.

I took the sedan to Bear Mountain Auto Body to have the bodywork done. They also did the paint in a lime green base coat/clear coat.

Bob Dorval helped me with the engine and rear-end work. John Burnelle helped with the woodwork and a few other things that needed to be done.

Mike’s Old Style Rod and Custom did the exhaust work along with the emergency brake, wiring and more. The upholstery needed work and I chose Joel Harrison from the Upholdery to do that work.

Victoria Chrome Shop and Electro Shine did the chrome work. To finish it off, I put disc brakes and GM Rally wheels on.

It may have taken me eight years to rebuild this car, but it was well worth it, as I have been enjoying it for six years and counting.

Tom’s Chevy Sedan Delivery will be one of the feature cars in the Rock Roll for Little Souls Charity Car Show on May 27-29 at Pearkes Recreation Centre, 3100 Tillicum Rd.

The Saanich Fire Fighters’ Charitable Foundation, along with car enthusiasts, volunteer their time at this event to raise money for charity. To date, the foundation has raised more than $300,000 toward children’s health on Vancouver Island.

Rock and Roll for Little Souls has helped purchase equipment for pediatric and neonatal care such as a Giraffe omnibed, Pediatric Oncology Negative Pressure Room renovations and a ventilator for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Also, because of the great support from volunteers and community, the event has been able to support Butterfly Ball, Jeneece Place and youth mental health programs within Greater Victoria.

This year’s event will feature 75 vehicles to view and the popular VRX race simulator. There will be a kids area on May 28, and hotdogs, doughnuts and root beer floats on May 28 and 29.
