Win lifts Blackhawks above .500

Camilo Rodrigue- Melo netted two goals and ended a 32- game scoring drought to help the Thorold Blackhawks to a 4- 1 victory over the visiting Welland Jr. Canadians.

The goals were the first of his junior B career for the 18- yearold from Sudbury. He has eight assists for a total of 10 points for the Blackhawks.

Jacob Mastrangel­o and Brendan Charlton also scored for the hosts in a Thursday night Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League game at Thorold Community.

Maliek Powell replied for Welland which was outshot 30- 27 and lost to the Blackhawks for the second game in a row. Thorold opened a home- and- home series with a 3- 2 victory Sunday night at Welland Arena.

The victory was Thorold’s third in a row and fifth in six games. Welland lost its second straight.

Special teams were only a factor on defence with the Jr. Canadians going 0- for- 5 on the power play and the Blackhawks 0- for- 3.

Anthony Tremonte stopped 26 shots to earn the victory and lower his goal- against average to 3.53 in 30 games between the pipes for his hometown junior B team.

The win lifted Thorold above .500 improving the team’s record in league play to 18- 17- 3- 3.

The Blackhawks are fifth in the nine- team Golden Horseshoe Conference, 12 points back of the Niagara Falls Canucks, 25- 100- 4, and nine ahead of Welland, 14- 21- 3- 2, heading into last night’s action.

Thorold and Welland are back on the ice Sunday. The Blackhawks visit the Pelham Panthers, beginning at 2: 30 p. m., while the Jr. Canadians host the Buffalo Regals for a 7: 05 p. m. puck drop.

Blackhawks owner- head coach Scott Barnes is 3- 1 against the Panthers, the team he coached last year with two of those games requiring overtime.

Welland leads the season series versus Buffalo four wins to none, eight points to one. The Regals earned a consolatio­n point in a 3- 2 overtime loss Nov. 7 in Buffalo.

Other Golden Horseshoe action Saturday has the St. Catharines Falcons at the Fort Erie Meteors, 7 p. m., and Niagara Falls at the Caledonia Corvairs, 7: 30 p. m.
