Woman dies in 140 crash
A woman is dead and four people are injured following a threevehicle pileup on Highway 140 at the intersection of Netherby Road in Welland.
Niagara Emergency Medical Service spokesperson Mayram Traub said, in addition to the fatality, two patients were transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and two more patients were transported in stable condition.
Traub said three ambulances and a paramedic supervisor responded to the collision at 3:46 p.m. Sunday.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a sixth person involved in the collision was uninjured.
Neither the identities of the crash victims nor the vehicles they were in at the time of the collision have been released.
Schmidt said the OPP collision reconstruction and traffic support units were called in to investigate the collision that left a black pickup truck on its roof, and two other vehicles damaged at the side of the highway.
“We’re still investigating and appealing for any witnesses,” he said via a Twitter post.
Welland firefighters and Niagara Regional Police were called to the scene to assist.
Traub said an air ambulance was called out as well, but instead responded to an ATV rollover in Niagara-on-the-Lake to transport a female patient to an out of region trauma centre, while a male patient was transported to a local area hospital.
Highway 140 was closed to traffic until nearly midnight for the investigation.
The crash was the second in two days on the stretch of highway.
Injuries were reported in a two-vehicle collision at 3:17 a.m. Saturday on Highway 140 between Enterprise Drive and Ridge Road — about a block north from the intersection where Sunday’s crash occurred.
The highway was closed until about 10:30 a.m. as a result of the earlier collision.
