York Regional Police Presents 20232025 Inclusive Policing Action Plan

York Regional Police is proud to present the 2023-2025 Inclusive Policing Action Plan, approved by the Police Services Board on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, enriching inclusive practices for our community and our members.

The three-year plan lays out specific strategies to promote Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibil­ity (IDEA) across the organizati­on and in our community. It reflects our collective action to advance a more inclusive police service through 11 action and solution-focused objectives.

The plan was informed by the previous 2020-2022 Action Plan and consultati­ons with and reports issued by internal and external stakeholde­rs, including the Enhanced Community Engagement­s and Community Policing: A review of York Regional Police Anti-Racism Practices report; the Anti-Black Racism Working Group report; and the Police Services Board Committee on Anti-Black Racism and Building Trust in Community Policing report.Overseen by the Profession­alism, Leadership and Incusion Office, the plan focuses on building organizati­onal capacity to achieve the objectives, which include:

Embedding equity principles in recruitmen­t processes Anti-discrimina­tion policies, practices and processes are modernized to support a safe and respectful workplace Relationsh­ips between police and community are strengthen­ed

Members are educated about the Truth and Reconcilia­tion Commission findings

Wellness supports that address the biological, psychologi­cal, social and spiritual needs of members and their families

Members with accessibil­ity needs are supported by internal programs, education and awareness initiaives Other elements of the plan include mandatory anti-racism training; the creation of an anti-racism and race equity strategy; and an equity audit to review programs and policies to identify possible systemic barriers to racial equity and inclusion. Additional­ly, the plan includes a two-year project on race and identityba­sed data collection, under the direction of consultant Dr. Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, which will focus on employment data and police interactio­ns. ìThe Executive Leadership Team is committed to ensuring that as leaders, we will be present, actively listen, seek out diverse perspectiv­es and act with intention to achieve incusion, diversity, equity and accessibil­ity in our organizati­on and in our community,î said Chief Jim MacSween.
