Sore throat? Call the chef

- Erin Sulley

Cold chills, sore throat, cough and aches… Ugh! All the feel of a cold coming on. Let’s be real for a second, there’s no avoiding a cold when it swoops through the house or the office. It’s like a little evil germ that bounces around from person to person, laughing and saying, “gotcha”.

So what am I doing writing about colds in a foodie column? I was doing my usual perusal of

Pinterest and came across a cool recipe for easy homemade gummies to soothe the throat.

I don’t know what you’re like when you’re down and out with a cold but I am a huge fan of throat lozenges. They provide comfort to all the coughing, dry, scratchy and sore symptoms. The problem, I use them like candy and forget that they are actually medicated and come with directions. I have no doubt that in my lifetime, I’ve over medicated a hundred times on throat lozenges. I really hope you can relate to this. If not, I’ll feel completely stunned.

This recipe appealed to me because it’s all of four ingredients — lemon, ginger, honey and gelatin. Simps! Get a load of the wonderful things they provide: ginger is said to have anti-inflammatory properties which helps with swelling, honey has been used for centuries for its antibacterial properties and lemon is blocked with vitamins and helps to keep your throat moist.

The one ingredient that made me go, “huh, I didn’t know that”, was gelatin. It is described as a superfood and high in protein. To me, gelatin brings back painful memories. We used it as a hair product in synchronized swimming competitions. I’m surprised I have so much hair left. It’s comparable to putting concrete in your hair once the product dried.

All you need is two cups of water, one inch piece of ginger, a quarter cup of lemon juice, three tablespoons of honey and four tablespoons of gelatin and fun silicone molds.

You can find baking molds in just about any craft or food related store. I’ve collected quite a few over the years as I enjoy making my own homemade chocolates. If you don’t have molds on hand, you can use a baking dish. Pour the mixture into the dish, let it set and cut them into small squares.

This is a great way to entice the kiddie to take their sore throat gummies. How? Let them get involved. Depending on their age, you can get them to help make the recipe, pick out the mold or help pour the mixture in the mold. The trick afterwards might be keeping them from eating them all at once as candy.

“I’m so offended when my body decides to be sick. Like, I gave you a vegetable last week. How dare you!” – Unknown

I know we’re adults and all, but, let’s not forget that making fun gummies is also attractive to the older crowd. Presentation also applies here. Come on, a cute gummie to sooth your sore throat is much more appealing that a blob of yellow stuff.

Homemade sore throat gummies make great gifts if you’re looking to get a personal and feel good gift for someone who’s under the weather. All you have to do is place the gummies in a little jar, decorate it with a “homemade for you by me” note and tie a ribbon around the top. Wouldn’t that give you the fuzzy feels if you were on the receiving end?

The one thing to keep in mind when making this either for yourself or someone else – they have to be sealed and stored in a fridge.
