Inductees are chosen for inspiring the business community
Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador, an organization which seeks to foster the economic literacy of youth in the province, will be honouring several members of the local business community in May 2020, a news release sent to the Telegram said.
New inductees to the Business Hall of Fame will be Cathy Bennett, Aubrey and Reginald Budgell, and the founders of Verafin — Jamie King, Brendan Brothers and Raymond Pretty.
Bennett, who was a member of the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 2014 to 2018, and finance minister, is being recognized for her more than
30 years in business.
During that time she has been a
CEO, entrepreneur and members of boards of director in a number of industries.
“Cathy has been extensively involved in the charitable and volunteer sectors and is currently co-chair/founder of Connectionl, a community-based volunteer organization facilitating mentorship for new and growing businesses,” the news release said.
Aubrey and Reginald Budgell, two brothers from Triton, have been in business together since the late 1980s. They grew their small construction company into a multimillion-dollar business, and ran several other businesses, from a sports shop to a mining company, over the years.
“Their mindset in community giving and support extends into Labrador and many other small communities,” the news release noted.
Verafin is now a North American leader in fraud detection and anti-money laundering software, servicing almost 3,000 banks and credit unions.
”Verafin’s internal charity, Veracares, provides fundraising and volunteer support for local organizations,” the news release said. “Veracares has raised over $800,000 since 2013 and provided hundreds of volunteer hours. Their work in the community has earned them a Board of Trade award for community impact.”
They will be inducted into the JA Business Hall of Fame at the Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony which will be held at the St. John’s Convention Centre.
