Road To The Canada Summer Games

-

2017 will mark the third consecutive Summer Games that golf will be included as a full medal sport. This province has competed at the 2009 Games in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and the 2013 Games in Sherbrooke, Que., and this year will travel to Winnipeg Man., to compete in the golf competition at the Southwood golf & Country Club from Aug. 6-12.

Golf NL has been fortunate to have had great representation at previous games with the likes of Erin Lundrigan, Nikeshantees Penashue and Blair Bursey leading our respective golf contingent. As in previous games, the selection of the boys and girls teams will be based on an Order of Merit (OOM) point system. Beginning in 2016, any eligible player competing at the Royal Lepage Provincial Junior Championships, Future Links Atlantics, National Junior Championship, 2016 NL Summer Games and/ or the Tely Tour Championships received OOM points. This year there will be two eligible competitions including the Royal Lepage Provincial Junior Championships taking place at Grande meadows golf Club and the Future Links Atlantics being held at the Claire Golf & Country Club in Nova Scotia.

At the conclusion of these competitions Golf NL will complete the calculations and announce the three boys and three girls that will represent the province at this year’s Canada Summer Games. The team will be coached by PGA professional Wayne Allen and the manager is Sandra Sparrow. There are presently six players in contention for the boys team while four individuals have the potential to make up the girls team. The teams will be announced on Friday July 21 in St. John’s and will be based on the final standings in the OOM. The team will then have two weeks to make final preparations for the Games as they will leave on Saturday Aug. 5 and begin competition on Monday Aug. 7.

Golf NL will be tracking the team throughout the Games and in the coming months will profile some of the players representing the province at this years games.
