Catherine Hogan Safer’s “Wild Pieces” (Creative Book Publishing) is a finalist for the Alistair MacLeod Prize for Short Fiction, it was announced Wednesday.

It’s one of five books out of Newfoundland and Labrador that are on the shortlist for the Atlantic Book Awards.

Safer’s competition for the short fiction prize is “Knife Party at the Hotel Europa” by Mark Athony Jarman (Goose Lane Editions) and “I Am What I Am Because you Are What You Are” by Carole Glasser Langille (Gaspereau Press Ltd.).

Two out of three books in the running for the APMA Best Atlantic-Published Book Award come from this province, too.

Breakwater Books’ “Racket: New Writing Made in Newfoundland,” edited by Lisa Moore, and Pedlar Press’s “Winter in Tilting: Slide Hauling in a Newfoundland Outport” by Robert Mellin go up against Nimbus Publishing’s “A Seaglass Journey: Ebb and Flow” by Teri Hall.

Susan Chalker Browne’s “The Story of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist” (Flanker Press) is a finalist for the Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing. The other finalists are Dean Jobb’s “Empire of Deception: The Incredible Story of a Master Swindler Who Seduced a City and Captivated the Nation” (Harper Avenue) and Pádraig Ó Siadhail’s “Katherine Hughes: A Life and a Journey” (Penumbra Publishing).

Finally, Gerard Doran’s “A Stroke in Time” (Flanker Press) is in the running for the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award. The other two finalists are Janet Maybee for her book “Aftershock: The Halifax Explosion and the Persecution of Pilot Francis Mackey” (Nimbus Publishing) and Sarah Mian for “When the Saints” (Harper-Collins Publishing).

The winners of the Atlantic Book Awards will be announced at an awards gala in Moncton on April 27.
