• On May 1, the Canadian Diabetes Associatio­n will host a free, interactiv­e workshop in St. John’s at the Holiday Inn, 180 Portugal Cove Rd. Juanita O’Leary, CDE will show you how to set S.M.A.R.T. wellness goals that stick, and Tonya Whittle, CPTN certified personal trainer, will lead the group in a resistance band exercise and give some practical tips on getting more active. Space is limited and pre-registrati­on is required. • St. Augustine’s Men’s Service Club will hold its annual flea market at St. Augustine’s Church, corner of Elizabeth Avenue and Westerland Road, on Saturday, May 3. Doors open at 9 a.m. and close at 12 p.m. Admission $1.

• The Anglican Cathedral will hold its spring parish sale on Saturday, May 3 beginning at 10 a.m. in the parish hall on Queen’s Road. Morning coffee, soup and sandwich lunch, eat-in turkey teas will be served and as usual there will be the full complement of interestin­g stalls. • Drop by The Craft Market on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, 58 Smallwood Dr. in Mount Pearl. Locally made merchandis­e by talented artists, items that will include everything from gifts for mom to that special piece of art for the garden. This month all proceeds from the Charity Cafe will go to the breast cancer practical support program which helps breast cancer patients by providing wigs, temporary prosthesis and mastectomy kits. • CWF Walk for Wildlife May 3. Join the Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Walking and Hiking Club with Jared Clarke, an avid local birder for a leisurely walk around Kent’s Pond. Meet 10 a.m. in the Confederat­ion complex eastern parking lot, off Prince Philip Drive. • The Canadian Children’s Book Centre is thrilled to announce the start of the 2014 TD Canadian Children’s Book Week, the largest celebratio­n of Canadian books for young people in Canada. • Kids Help Phone invites St. John’s residents to come out to Bowring Park on Sunday, May 4 and Be A Hero at The Walk so Kids Can Talk. The 5K Walk is Canada’s largest supporting child and youth mental health and well-being. Registrati­on begins at the Bowring Park Bunglaow at 11 a.m. and taking place rain or shine, the walk is a fun, family friendly event where you can enjoy an inspiring day outdoors while making a big difference for kids. • The annual general meeting of the Holyrood Pond Developmen­t Inc. will be held on May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Holyrood Pond Interpreta­tion Centre, St. Vincent’s, St Mary’s Bay (Route 90 South). This meeting will be of great interest and concern to those who have a cabin/chalet in the Crossing Place, or have an interest in the trail system in the area, or would like to see a boat launch/marina in Path End, and most especially for those who have a genuine interest in the Holyrood Pond and the surroundin­g area. • The Mount Pearl Citizen’s Crime Prevention Committee hosts a family fun day on May 4 at the Reid Community Centre. Mount Pearl from 2-4 p.m. Cost is $3 per person with the proceeds supporting the DARE program and other MPCP community events. There will be face painting, bouncy castles, crafts, Child find, canteen services and entertainm­ent and special prize draws. Everyone is welcome and there will be something for all ages.

Monday, May 5

• Come to MUN Botanical Garden and celebrate composting during Internatio­nal Compost Awareness Week. Admission is free. Registrati­on is not required. A variety of programs are available during Compost Week, including free lunchtime lectures May 5–9, compost exhibits, informatio­n and an indoor vermicompo­ster or worm bin. On May 11, drop by for a slice of celebratio­n cake (gummy worms included) during the Three Cheers for Composting Family Program. MUN Botanical Garden is proud to partner with MMSB during Compost Awareness Week to help promote composting in our communitie­s. • Eastern Health’s Social Work Department at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre is offering a free seven-week program for cancer survivors who have been finished treatment from six weeks to two years. The program, titled Cancer Transition­s, Moving Beyond Treatment, is designed to provide cancer survivors with support and education about exercise, nutrition, emotional health, well-being and medical management that will help them as they continue on their path to wellness. The program will start May 7 and run on Wednesday afternoons for seven weeks at The Works on 17 Westerland Rd. in St. John’s. Sessions will include 30 minutes of exercise, followed by two hours of group discussion, education and support.
