Man charged after drug bust released from custody
Bail hearing for second man set for today
One
of two St. John’s men arrested in a drug bust in the centre of the capital city four days ago has been released from jail.
Trevor Gary Ryland was back in provincial court in St. John’s Monday for what was expected to be a bail hearing.
However, a hearing wasn’t needed when Crown prosecutor Trevor Bridger agreed to have Ryland released on strict conditions.
Judge Greg Brown read the conditions to Ryland.
The 24-year-old has to pay a $5,000 cash deposit and agree to report to RNC weekly, stay away from drugs, remain in the province and have no contact with his coaccused, Sean Jamal Dunn.
Ryland is also not permitted to have cellphones or any other mobile communication devices. He’s due back in court July 19. Dunn, 26, is scheduled to have a bail hearing today.
Both men are charged with possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Dunn also faces two additional charges of possessing a prohibited weapon.
The RNC arrested the men Fri- day afternoon at a house on Mayor Avenue in St. John’s.
The drug investigation unit, with a search warrant, arrived at the house just after 5 p.m.
They found an undisclosed quantity of cocaine and drug paraphernalia, more than $10,000 in cash and several prohibited weapons.
A 23-year-old woman was also arrested at the house and charged with possession of a prohibited drug and released to appear in court at a later date. Her name was not released to the public.
Ryland and Dunn, both from
St.
John’s, made their initial court appearance Saturday morning and were remanded into custody for the weekend.
Meanwhile, on Monday afternoon, the RNC gave reporters a glimpse what they recovered during the bust.
Displayed for the cameras were two realistic-looking pellet guns, brass knuckles, bear spray, various knives, cocaine, cutting agents, cellphones, notebooks and cash.
