Winning week for Brock athletes

Basran, Foest give top performanc­es

Men’s hockey player Roman Basran and women’s volleyball player Emily Foest are Brock University’s top athletes for the week ending Sunday.

Basran, a first-year social sciences student from Richmond, B.C., backstoppe­d the Badgers to back-toback victories over the Toronto Blues, 3-1 at home; and Waterloo, 6-2 on the road. He had a 1.50 goalsagain­st average and a .919 save percentage as Brock improved to 16-7 in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference play. Basran has four wins in five starts since joining the Badgers in January. Brock visits the Toronto Blues (12-9-2) on Friday and will be home to the Lakehead Thunderwol­ves on Saturday.

Foest had 10 kills and two service aces in a three-set victory over the York Lions on Friday and 12 points and four digs the following night, also in a sweep over York.

A second-year medical sciences major from Fonthill, Foest is one of six Brock players averaging more than two points per set. The graduate of Notre Dame College School in Welland is third on the Badgers in total points, 111.2; kills, 93; and service aces, 11.

This week, Brock (13-2) visits the Waterloo Warriors (14-2) in women’s university volleyball seeking its third win in a row.

Back on the hardwood

Brock hosts the Toronto Blues in a doublehead­er on Friday night hoping to extend a win streak in men’s basketball to seven games and return to the win column in women’s hoops.

Isaiah Bujdoso, with 20 points; Jesse Barnes, Jevon Brown, 14 each; Jordan Tchuente, 12; and Daniel Caldwell, 11; scored in double digits as the fifth-ranked Badgers improved to 13-3 with an 85-79 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday in Sudbury.

Tchuente and Barnes were the team’s top rebounders with nine and eight, respective­ly.

Brock tipped off the trip to northeaste­rn Ontario the night before by downing the Nipissing Lakers, 9966, in North Bay.

Brown paced the Badgers with a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Bujdoso added 19 points and came down with six rebounds.

After downing Nipissing 67-53 for their second win in a row, the Brock women dropped a 53-50 decision to Laurentian to fall to 9-7 in league play.

Three Badgers — Olivia Fiorucci, 15; Madelyn Weinert, Noor Bazzi, 11 each — reached double digits in scoring against the Lakers. Fiorucci, Weinert and Kaley Demont netted 13, 12 and 11 points, respective­ly, versus the Voyageurs.

Weinert had a team-high 12 rebounds in the game at Nipissing and also led Brock with 11 the following night. Oluwatito Akinnusi had 10 rebounds in the loss at Laurentian.
