A round of golf had a lot more action than was likely expected for people who were at Sawmill Golf Course in Fenwick on Saturday.

At about 7 p.m., a a truck and car collided head-on on Sawmill Road, near the entrance to the public course.

A foursome on the ninth green and another on the 10th tee saw it happen and rushed over to assist two people who were injured.

Golfers broke open the window of a car and removed the male victim, dragging him to safety, moments before the vehicle was “engulfed in flames,” Niagara Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Bryce Brunarski said on Sunday.

“The male was treated and stabilized on scene and transported to local hospital. He was conscious and alert, and suffered a left arm fracture,” he said.

A female driver of the truck was taken to hospital and was in stable condition, said Brunarski, adding he did not have an update on injuries Sunday.

The golf course is showing its appreciation for the courageous golfers to provide them with free rounds and a VIP treatment with food and drinks.

“It’s the least we can do,” said general manager Carrie Julie.

A Facebook post about the incident from Sawmill Golf Course had been shared close to 600 times as of Sunday afternoon.

It asked people to come forward with information about who the golfers were, and it has resulted in them being contacted to set up a day at the course.

Julie said all of them acted like heroes.

“Both groups took off running. It was just instinct and really amazing,” she said.

Pelham fire Chief Bob Lymburner said the he was aware of the incident and that it appeared two of the golfers took the lead before the arrival of emergency services.
